QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls) is proudly supporting Independent MPP Bobbi-Ann Brady (Haldimand-Norfolk)’s motion to have OHIP cover the cost of prostate cancer testing in Ontario — a cause Gates has long championed at Queen’s Park. Gates previously introduced this life-saving initiative in the legislature, and says he’s pleased to see momentum building across party lines. Gates says this is a critical opportunity to come together for the health of Ontarians.
“This isn’t about politics — it’s about saving lives,” said Gates. “Every year, thousands of men are diagnosed too late because cost is a barrier to early testing. We can fix that. I’m proud to support MPP Brady’s motion, and I hope every member in the legislature does the same.”
“In the Ontario Legislature, I have in the past stood and called on the government to step up on this important health care issue for men,” said Brady. “Seeing no movement on this initiative and inspired by the long-time calls for this important change from my colleague Wayne Gates, MPP for Niagara Falls, I have renewed the call with the motion asking the Ford government to cover the cost of PSA tests through OHIP when referred by a healthcare provider.”
The call to action comes just ahead of Father’s Day — a time Gates says is perfect for raising awareness about men’s health and encouraging the government to act.
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian men. Currently, PSA testing — a key tool for early detection — is not covered by OHIP unless there are already symptoms, often making it too late for early intervention.
Gates says Ontario has a chance to lead with compassion, common sense, and unity.
“Let’s make this the year we get it done — together.”
We're so happy to have you on the team. We'll be in touch soon.
