QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP Shadow Housing Minister Catherine McKenney (Ottawa Centre) says that Doug Ford has given up on solving the housing crisis, evidenced by failure after failure when it comes to building homes.
Internal documents obtained by Global News reveal that the Ford government was acknowledging as recently as late 2024 that they would fail to meet their target of 1.5 million homes by 2031.
“Doug Ford is waving the white flag on housing,” said McKenney. “After eight years of this Premier, Ontario is dead last nationally when it comes to building homes. Even after he expanded the definition of a home to longterm care beds and dorm rooms, the 1.5 million target remains a pipe dream.
“The people of Ontario were counting on Doug Ford, and he failed them — again. They’re working hard, saving what they can, but thanks to this Conservative government, the dream of home ownership has never been further out of reach.”
Reporting by The Trillium also unearthed that the Conservatives’ transit-oriented communities project — and the 9,100 homes it was set to build — has been delayed.
“This government will do anything but actually build homes,” added McKenney. “Instead of another failed policy, they should implement our Homes Ontario plan, and finally build housing that people can afford.”
We're so happy to have you on the team. We'll be in touch soon.
